We have I guess several rules about places to go. With the violence we see in the world we have a few location rules. We like free secure parking.
With both of the places we taste wine early on Friday nights they have free secure parking. We no longer worry about the $5 - $15 Vallet parking at restaurants. It keeps us safe.
The Rainy Friday night we were at Creekside Supper Club on South Chicago Ave, ten blocks from the George Floyd Memorial, cars were parked bumper to bumper on the street. I parked three blocks away in an area we were not clear if parking was allowed. We ended up being fine but it does not make for a comfortable meal. I say this in case you have the same safety issues that we have.
That said we have decided we will no longer be going to SE or N Mpls until it is light until 9 in the summer problem. No apologies, if you are in those areas you need to fix your safety issues.
So back to Creekside Supper Club. If you are going to the place, best you have a GPS. We missed the place the first time. Drove around the block, we saw the sign the second time. Then we had to drive a third time to find parking three blocks away on a rainy dark night. And walk uphill on some old non-flat sidewalks in the rain.
To say I was less than impressed with the introduction would be an understatement. E from SD and I from WI grew up in Supper Clubs. Walking into Creekside was like returning to our youth complete with animal pictures, a mural of whitetail deer and the Piece de Resistance a sign that simply read Drink Wisconsibly.
So we entered into one of two spacious dining rooms with the traditional wainscoting coating surrounding the room. And mirrored ducks and wildlife art surrounding us. Even E said I’m back in the 60s & 70s in South Dakota. In an a way we kind of felt a bit more at home.
So we looked at the wine list and it had the current traditional wines. E had a Cab and I chose a Tempranillo mine was better than hers. But both were fine. The wines were one of the few things not in the 70s.
Now there was nothing wrong with the 70s an era many of us hark to these days.
So we went to the menu. Yep this is a Supper Club alright. We went with the Cheese curds and salad and then to the Fried Crab Stuffed Walleye Fish Fry and Fried Shrimp. Things we once ordered. Sorry no salad Bar but we think that is more Covid related. Again all were how we remember them. Perhaps not good for our diet. But diets need to be tossed out on a Friday night.
We had to chuckle as we looked around at the tables. It was Grandma, maybe grandpa, getting out their purse to pay for a meal for their kids & grandkids all at the table. We were truly in the 70s.
Our bill was $103 about the same as any comparable restaurant now days in the Twin Cities. Will we go back? Perhaps on a day that we feel home sick for the 70s. If you grew up on Supper Clubs Creekside Supper Club is worth an evening remembering your past.
